HDC’s Supportive Services received a grant from Rural LISC to provide a service learning project for high school students. On Friday, May 21, students from McCaskey High School in Lancaster spent the day at three HDC properties — Lancaster House North, Lancaster House South and Plum Tree Apartments — working in and around the buildings. Among the work they did was mulching, planting flowers, sweeping and cleaning floors.

Kelly McGaw, HDC’s supportive services coordinator at Lancaster House North, said, “I thought the students all did a great job!”

Her counterpart Betty Good, who was at Plum Tree Apartments, was equally effusive, saying that all of the students worked very hard. They had set up a boom box while they worked in the courtyard and playground, and Good described it as a “block party.”

The students all are part of McCaskey’s public leadership course of study and are  interested in public service careers. By participating in the service learning day, they help fulfill graduation requirements.
